“There is no passion to be found playing small—in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.” —Nelson Mandela
When you were in grade school and someone asked you what you wanted to be when you grow up, what was it for you? Many kids wish to be an astronaut, fireman, movie star, a doctor, or a million other notably impressive positions that only a select few actually realize in life. Then, there are other kids who haven’t the slightest clue. In fact, I’ve met many adults much older than I am that still don’t know what they want to be when they grow up!
That’s perfectly fine, but for the people that do have dreams…or did have dreams…all too many of us give up before actually giving them a chance.
There are a million excuses that people use every day not to pursue something. Maybe you’re putting it off until you have more free time, more money, or are waiting for something to change in your life first. Or perhaps you think that the cards are stacked against you and that your dream is better suited for someone else. These are all common excuses that people make “not” to pursue their passions.
How can you overcome these obstacles and truly make your dreams a reality? Well, it’s simple really. Not to be too cliche, but…the secret is to simply do it! Actually put your feet forward and take a step..in fact, take a few steps!! You may be shocked at the results.
Start by creating an action plan…what are 5 things you can do right now to put you in a position to accomplish your dreams? What are 10 things you can do? Now, make an action plan listing them out and when you will do them. Stick to the plan and see where it takes you.
Sure, you might not have instant success. You may fall or fail on your way up; that is normal and in fact, healthy. Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day. It takes practice and time to master anything.
The difference between most people who are living their dreams and those who are not is that the ones actually doing it, took steps to get where they are today. They made space to pursue their passions and didn’t give up.
My point is that if you want something bad enough, you can indeed do it. Our lives here are short. There are no guarantees and if you wish to accomplish something, if you have a dream, don’t wait for tomorrow. There is no better time to pursue your passions than now.
